We sat down for a chat with Charlie Pearson, the creative designer and founder of Luna Flo London. She shares her journey, what inspires her, and why she loves creating jewelry that tells a story and feels like a special secret kept close.
- What inspired you to start Luna Flo London?
Travel had a big impact on my creative journey. Growing up, my parents loved exploring different countries, their cultures and histories, so my sisters and I were exposed to a lot of powerful imagery early on. I have these vivid memories of rows of artifacts, seeing religious symbols and unique craftsmanship from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Growing up in 90’s London as a teenager, it was such a creative time. I was in art college and spent weekends at vintage markets and fairs, hunting for unique clothes and jewelry that caught my eye. I think I always knew I wanted to create something with lasting value and meaning.
In my 20s, I studied theatre, which gave me a deeper appreciation for character and how costumes tell their story. I found myself inspired by films like Breakfast at Tiffany's, To Catch a Thief, and Moulin Rouge — where jewelry becomes almost a character itself. When I started Luna Flo London, I wanted to create pieces with that timeless, transformative quality, carrying stories and memories that can be passed down through generations.
Although I set up Luna Flo London in my forties, it was a long time in the making, and perhaps because of that I've enjoyed the whole process even more. I've been able to bring together all my past experiences in business and the creative world from owning restaurants in LA, where I spent two decades and began my jewelry-making journey, to my return to London where I built the business on my own. I’m very excited for the next chapter in Luna Flo London's journey.
- Can you share the story behind the name Luna Flo London?
Just like the company, the name Luna Flo London is a blend of natural elements and personal connections. Luna, the moon, has always symbolized intuition, femininity and life's ever-changing cycles - qualities I wanted in my designs. It's my daughter Stella's middle name, as she was born on a full moon. Flo captures that sense of flow and creativity, and it's for my younger daughter Dylan Florence, named after Florence, the city I fell in love with in my 20s.
And London is where it all began — the city that’s shaped so much of my inspiration and my journey.
- How do you incorporate symbolism and storytelling into your jewelry designs at Luna Flo London?
Symbolism has been around since the beginning of time, and I believe its power is just as strong today. Constellations, animals, plants, stones and elements were our first teachers. Their significance is timeless.
I try to capture this timeless connection in my designs, using symbols to tell stories that reflect the inner journey of the wearer. I don’t like to limit my interpretation of symbolism; I believe we each create our own symbols of connection shaped by our experience. My ideas are born from what inspires me — the interconnectedness of a design and its meaning. I see my jewelry as a crystallized form of expression and storytelling.
- What do you love most about what you do at Luna Flo London?
What I love most is seeing my creative ideas come to life and take on new meaning for others. It feels full circle when I think about how films inspired me growing up and now I get to design jewelry for film and TV. It's incredibly rewarding to work with people who genuinely believe in Luna Flo London and share my passion.
I’m always looking for jewelry that feels meaningful and unique. For me, it’s never about following trends. It’s about creating pieces that become heirlooms with a story that connects deeply with whoever wears them. I love the idea that jewelry can be a secret you keep close, something uniquely yours to treasure.
